BACKGROUND

Foreign power often visits the Providence Northern, for a number of reasons. Because PN itself owns and operates a large lease fleet, there is often foreign power seen on PN lines, paying back horsepower-hours. PN lines also see a great deal of run-through power, given the connection it has with other Class 1 railroads, at Maybrook, Framingham, Montreal, St. Johnsbury, and McAdam.

The large PN shops at Providence, also do a great deal of contract repair and maintenance on locomotives of other railroads.
